About

The Rhapsodies (free-form compositions) were written over two days in August 2010. Taylor had been listening to some world music, in particular music of Africa, and was enchanted by the sound of their instruments. Even though Taylor originally wanted to write a piece for the West African xylophone, the idea soon morphed into a composition for flute, guitar and western concert xylophone. Taylor is the first composer to write for this combination in the history of classical music repertoire.

The sounds of the Balafon (an xylophone made of wooden mallets and calabashes) inspired Taylor.
