About
A King In Vienna, Taylor's first tone/symphonic poem almost didn't happen. It was originally to be a full four movement symphony that sat unfinished for over a year. After writing a few smaller pieces, Taylor went back to these symphony sketches to create the lush, majestic sound textures that are "A King In Vienna".
A King In Vienna is based on the German epic poem of the middle ages entitled "The Nibelungenlied (Song of the Nibelungs)". More information can be found here.
After reading this story, Taylor was also inspired by a scene from it, where King Etzel arrives to the city of Vienna on horseback. Below is a painting of this scene that exists.
